The New Antioxidant "Super Fruit"

We all know cherries taste good. But, did you know that emerging evidence is showing that they are healthy in ways we never knew about before?

 

Tart cherries, in particular, have been gaining lots of attention in the nutrition world. Whether dried, frozen, or as juice, tart cherries have among the highest levels of antioxidants, when compared to other fruits. They are rich in many vitamins and minerals as well (beta carotene, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, iron, fiber, and folate).

 

New evidence suggests tart cherries help ease the pain of arthritis and gout. And a University of Michigan study found that a cherry-enriched diet lowered weight, body fat, inflammation, and cholesterol.

 

Cherries also contain melatonin, which has been used as sleep aid and as a way to fight jet lag.

 

Former flight instructor and current purchasing agent Brian Grote told us about a tart cherry tree in his backyard, and gave us some information about the benefits referenced above. He then shared the idea of selling Chukar Cherries on the Pacific Health website. It seemed a perfect fit.
