Creatine: Evidence Shows That It Can Increase Energy, Muscle Mass

Among body-builders, creatine has long been a go-to supplement. It can increase energy and strength, allowing for more reps with higher weight to quickly produce results. It also has factors that promote weight gain, making it a great ally for those looking to tack on muscle mass. While creatine monohydrate is the most common and well-known form, there are emerging products that combine different types of creatine with other beneficial ingredients to promote even better results.

Benefits and Evidence:

Creatine is an amino acid that is broken down and stored in the muscles for use as energy, which allows for more intense workouts more often. Specifically, the University of Maryland Medical Center states that creatine is broken down into phosphocreatine, which “during high-intensity, short-duration exercise, such as lifting weights or sprinting… is converted into ATP, a major source of energy within the human body.” And “because creatine is an ‘osmotically active substance,’ it pulls water into your muscle cells, which increases protein synthesis,” according to Chad Kerksick, Ph.D, in an article for Men’s Health magazine. This means that supplementing with creatine will almost definitely lead to weight gain. Furthermore, “studies in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that muscle fibers grow when a person takes creatine,” according to Men’s Health. These changes take place rapidly and, along with longer, tougher workouts due to increased energy and strength, allow you to increase muscle mass. And research supports these findings: according to the Mayo Clinic, “several high-quality studies have shown an increase in muscle mass with the use of creatine.” Though more studies are necessary, the Mayo Clinic states that “overall, the available evidence suggests that creatine does increase lean body mass, strength, and total work.”

To get the most out of your creatine supplement, it is important to focus on quality. One that includes Sodium Creatine Phosphate Matrix, for instance, combines sodium with creatine, which allows the body to absorb creatine into muscle cells more efficiently. It does so by making creatine more soluble and increasing uptake of creatine by muscle cells, because the transporter that carries creatine to muscles is dependent on sodium. Creatine analogs like Creatinol-O-Phosphate-Malic Acid Interfusion and Creatine Alpha-Amino-N-Butyrate add to the mix, also helping the body to more efficiently absorb creatine while providing energy and anti-catabolic and anabolic effects, respectively. Catabolism is the breakdown of muscle tissue that expends energy, while anabolic substances help the body to synthesize protein, resulting in the building of muscle. This allows for faster recovery and greater muscle mass.

BSN CellMass provides high-quality Sodium Creatine Phosphate Matrix, Creatinol-O-Phosphate-Malic Acid and Creatine Alpha-Amino-N-Butyrate, plus BSN’s cutting edge propriety blend Creatine EthylEster-Beta-Alanine Dual Action Composite, or CarnoSyn®. This blend helps to decrease muscle fatigue and burn by keeping accumulation of lactic acid and hydrogen ions at bay and by further increasing solubility and absorption. CellMass also contains the anti-catabolic amino acid Glutamine and other components to help you to increase energy, build muscle, and perform your best.
