Forget the sugary energy drinks and energize the healthy way

Whether itís a mid-day slump or just not wanting to get out of bed in the morning, we all know that feeling of being too tired to get things done. Too often people reach for energy drinks loaded with sugar or something sweet from the vending machine. But this will only give you temporary energy and then lead to even worse fatigue. According to Jim White, American  Dietetic Association spokesman, energy drinks are not the way to go. ďI see a lot of people spike up and crash hard" with energy drinks, he says. Protein, complex carbs and proper hydration can fuel your body to keep your energy up without the crash.

Here are some foods that will give you energy and much more:

     1. Coffee

This is probably no revelation; people use coffee every day to wake up and keep going. However, health experts have recently found health benefits of coffee that you may not know about. Coffee is high in antioxidants and new research has shown that it may even protect against type 2 diabetes, Parkinsonís and certain types of cancer. So drink up, just remember not to over-do it and to have your last cup of joe at least eight hours before bed.

     2. Quinoa

Itís no wonder that this grain is widely known for its health benefits. Quinoa is a great source of magnesium and potassium, which help the body to stay hydrated. Hydration is key to energy-without proper hydration fatigue and weakness WILL set in.  Quinoa also contains plenty of fiber and iron, and is a great complex carbohydrate and complete protein.

     3. Tree nuts like cashews and almonds

Not only do nuts provide  protein and fiber, they also have vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats to keep you feeling your best.

     4. Chia seeds

Chia seeds provide Omega-3 essential fatty acids, soluble fiber, antioxidants and vitamins.  Chia seeds gel when they come in contact with liquid, and the gelling effect allows you to feel full longer and stabilizes blood sugar, allowing your body to feel naturally energized. In fact, chia seeds are such a powerful energizer that ancient Aztecs, Mayans and Native Americans would consume only a small amount of the seeds before long journeys to stay hydrated and energetic.

     5. Fatty, cold water fish such as salmon

This low-calorie protein source contains Omega-3 essential fatty acids and B vitamins, a great natural way to keep energy levels up. Fatty fish also contains potassium, magnesium and vitamin D, all essential to feeling great.

     6. Water

You may not think of water as an energy booster, but it is one of the simplest ways to feel your best. Dehydration causes fatigue and mental sluggishness, so staying properly hydrated is absolutely essential to staying alert and energetic.
